Ward 13 Alderman Diane Colley-Urquhart

Shawnee Slopes Golf Course

Shawnee Slopes Golf Course

  • The potential redevelopment of the Shawnee Slopes Golf Course is the most significant issue facing Ward 13 in the coming year. In December 2008, I asked Council to consider purchasing the course before a sale was finalised with the new owners. We were formally advised that the sale was private and to desist.

I have always supported the current land use and the importance of this green space to south Fish Creek and this amenity in our community. I continue to work with the community in identifying and raising concerns on a number of issues arising from this proposed re-development. I have had numerous meetings, town halls and open houses to ensure that the community is well informed and citizens concerns are heard.

City planners have recently provided the applicant with their first round of a Detailed Team Response (DTR) - comments and concerns that must be addressed. I have reviewed this extensive and comprehensive document and am very pleased with the level of detail, in that it reflects many of the community concerns as well as mine. The 23 page DTR, lists 156 items that must be addressed to the City's satisfaction in written form before the application can move forward. This does not at this point include traffic issues both within and outside the proposed development, which are yet to come.
  • The City has a 19 - 23 year planned land supply (8062 hectares) in greenfield suburban area structure plans, providing ample land for growth demand. The MDP requires that the City maintains at least a thirty-year developable land supply within The City's jurisdiction. Having a sufficient land supply is important in supporting a competitive housing market and competitive housing prices as Calgary grows. This is a significant land supply that will allow the city to be able to comfortably accommodate growth demands. "Calgary must maintain a land supply for future development and housing choices for Calgarians. We must sensitively intensify along corridors and transit hubs in existing developed communities such as Shawnee", says Alderman Colley-Urquhart.
