In 2003, Calgary was designated by the WHO as a safe community, becoming one of the largest cities recognized world-wide. Calgary promotes safety through a large variety of programs and initiatives. To contribute to the effort of ongoing safety in our communities Diane is active as a Calgary Police Commissioner as well as a Director on the Alberta Law Enforcement Response Teams (ALERT) board.
The Calgary Police Commission has a mission to provide civilian oversight and governance to the Calgary Police Service to ensure a safe community. They do this by allocating fund provided by Council in consultation with the Chief of Police; establish efficient, effective policies and to instruct the Chief in regards to those policeis; and to ensure sufficient employment by the Police Service to carry out their mandate.
ALERT is an umbrella organization established by the Government of Alberta to bring together the province's most sophisticated law enforcement resources to tackle serious and organized crime. Close to 400 municipal police, RCMP and sheriffs work for ALERT. As a Director of the ALERT Board, Diane joins individuals selected from police commissions across Alberta in order to provide governance to the ALERT teams.
